Sports Authority of India stinging growth of Para-Athletes?

first_img2-time Asian para-cyling championship silver medallist and founder of the Aditya Mehta foundation, Aditya Mehta raised multiple questions on the way the Sports Authority of India has been treating para-athletes over the years. Mehta has hit out at the style of work of Sports Authority of India and said they have been lacklustre in their work.”We have been getting multiple complaints pertaining to the Sports Authority of India and their style of work. There have been instances where athletes lost out on medals at the international level due to accreditation issues or because of delay in procedural sanctions. There also have been instances where athletes were informed hours before their flights about their participation,” Mehta said in an exclusive conversation with India Today.”Government employees who want to represent the country need to take permissions from multiple authorities which is very time consuming and there have been instances where athletes missed out on tournaments due to delay in the same. An Asian games bronze-medallist was informed 3 hours prior to his flight that his participation has been confirmed. The system should be a boon to an athlete and not a bane. The priority of the athlete should be getting medals but it unfortunately isn’t because of the above mentioned reasons,” Mehta further said. The most shocking of all revelations made by the para-athletes was that one of the officials went to the extent of saying, ‘You (para-athletes) win medals due to lack of competition’.Mehta questioned the way para-athletes are being looked down upon and went on to say that if SAI gets ready to work towards the growth of para-athletes in the country, we could see a drastic increase in the number of international medals and the ocassions on which the tricolour stands the tallest.advertisementAditya Mehta apart form being a para-cyclist himself, runs a foundation called the Aditya Mehta foundation which supports para-athletes across the country financially and even otherwise with their training.A total of 180 athletes are now being supported by his foundation. Athletes training with the help of the foundation have secured a mammoth 80 international medals by far.Not so long ago, 6 officials of the Sports Authority of India were arrested by the Central Bureau of India under charges of corruption. While the point of discussion always is about Indian contingents failing to secure as many medals as their counterparts, there are bigger issues and the basic level which needs to be dealt with in order to make sure that the nation performs to its fullest potential at the international level.last_img
